Mossberg Model 190 Serial Number Location

Mossberg Model 190 Serial Number Location

The Mossberg Model 190 is a bolt-action shotgun that was produced by O.F. Mossberg & Sons from 1955 to 1958. It was chambered for 16 gauge shells and had a detachable box magazine that held two rounds. The shotgun had a plain hardwood stock, a blued metal finish, and a bead front sight. The Mossberg Model 190 was marketed as a low-cost hunting and utility shotgun that could be used for various purposes.

One of the questions that many owners and collectors of the Mossberg Model 190 have is where to find the serial number on their shotgun. Unlike modern firearms, the Mossberg Model 190 did not have a serial number stamped on the receiver or the barrel. This is because the serial number requirement for firearms in the United States was not enacted until 1968 by the Gun Control Act. Before that, many manufacturers did not put serial numbers on their firearms, or only did so on certain models or for certain customers.

According to some sources, the Mossberg Model 190 did have a serial number, but it was not visible on the exterior of the shotgun. The serial number was located inside the receiver, on the left side of the bolt. To access the serial number, one would have to disassemble the shotgun and remove the bolt from the receiver. The serial number consisted of a letter prefix followed by six digits, such as A123456 or Z654321. The letter prefix indicated the year of manufacture, with A being the earliest and Z being the latest.

However, other sources claim that the Mossberg Model 190 did not have a serial number at all, even inside the receiver. This could be because some of the shotguns were made from surplus parts that were not marked with serial numbers, or because some of the shotguns were sold to foreign markets that did not require serial numbers. In any case, it is possible that some of the Mossberg Model 190 shotguns are completely devoid of any serial number, making them impossible to date or trace.

Therefore, the location of the serial number on a Mossberg Model 190 shotgun depends on whether it has one or not. If it does have one, it is hidden inside the receiver and requires disassembly to reveal it. If it does not have one, it is simply non-existent and cannot be found anywhere on the shotgun. Either way, finding the serial number on a Mossberg Model 190 shotgun is not an easy task and may require some expertise and caution.
